On Saturday May 18th, the Red Rock 4-Wheelers held their May “Trail of the Month”. This months’ trail was Dome Plateau located along and above scenic Highway 128 northeast of Moab. Twenty one vehicles participated in the excursion. Total off-road trail distance was 38.2 miles and we enjoyed 7 hours of trail time.
Trail conditions were absolutely perfect with a bit of overcast and dry trails. Obstacles were handled with ease and everyone who drove onto the trail drove off. THat alone makes for an enjoyable, successful event.
The dinosaur tracks are always a featured stop on this trail. While participants enjoyed viewing the tracks, Rebecca Darezzo, who was also our trail leader, provided pictures to go with a plethora of information about the dinosaurs who once roamed this landscape.
When lunchtime arrived the group had made it to one of the best overlooks in the Moab area. The La Sal Mountains, Professor Valley, Castle Valley, the Colorado River and multiple mesas provided an epic view while partaking in lunch.
The group was then off again and a contingent stopped at Boca Arch along the trail.
A bit further down the trail then entire group stopped and enjoyed the cool atmosphere in the Cowboy Caves.
The group then made our final stop at the Dome Uranium Mine. Mark Pope, our resident nuclear expert, provided information on Alpha and Beta emitters, half lifes’, explained the results of the Geiger Counter he had brought along and made sense of mine we were exploring.
"If you can't do great things, do small things in a great way."
