Lots of good advice given so far. I would add that a some things can only be learned on the trail. Ride with some other people. When the opportunity to spot presents itself, get out and pay attention to the guys spotting for other rigs. Experience as a spotter translates well to the driver's seat and vise versa. My youngest son is in this phase now. He wants to buy a Jeep and wheel but until he does he rides with me and a few guys from a club we wheel with. He's learning a lot just by being there and watching the more experienced guys on the ground and in the seat.

Good points especially about going out with others.

If you stand along the trail and watch what a vehicle has to do to move along the trail (obstacles it can go over, others it has to avoid, the correct line and what that is) as well as watch how a spotter correctly (and sometimes incorrectly!) guides the driver on the correct line - you'll learn a LOT
