The iPad mini with cellular includes a built in GPS. That's what I used to run on a knee board in my airplane. It avoided the need for the tethered GPS.

I never activated the cellular, so I didn't have any monthly fees.

Thanks man. The fact that it's some odd thread that matches nothing but some other custom made knob that's twice what the RAM part is ridiculous. It might be the best way for now but still looking at my options.
I would skip that. I ran that with a samsung tab s7+ and it stripped the thread on that. I would probably only use for nothing heavier than a phone. Also way overpriced.

We use a product on our boat called Scanstrut Rokk for mounting an iPad. Nobody mentioned using the brand. Yes I know it’s not a jeep, but four foot seas are no doubt just as jarring as an off road trail so it may be worth investigation for use in a harsh environment. I use this for holding an IPad 11” as a back up navigation device. We”ve been out in pretty nasty conditions and never had an iPad take flight. Here is a pic in action with the old iPad.

Also if you have a non cellular iPad you can purchase an add on GPS from Bad Elf that will give you navigation capability.

Thanks, I've actually got their locking phone case setup for my iPhone/RAM mount that works magnificently ;)
