Trail Rail Crossbars vs Roof rack

I need some guidance. I am trying to decide exactly what I need. I have a trail rail system and want to mount bikes. Do i need the crossbars and a bike rack (Thule for example), or the roof rack, which i think may attach to the rails?
Any help would be appreciated. I am a visual learner too if you have photos. Thanks.

I use a Rocky Mounts Loball which attaches to the rail system. Once I got a bed rack, I attached it to the rack.
