The system seems to be very picky about the quality of the cables used to connect phones. I had a lot of trouble until I switched to the Anker high durability cables. I have the three foot red version of this cable, and it has worked quite well for over fifteen months. I use a Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, so you might need a newer (higher speed) version of the cable for your phone.

Not saying you're wrong, but "picky" just doesn't mean "new, quality, etc". I've tried new/quality "data" cables that are real flaky as well. As a matter of fact the one that works the best for me is an old cheap cable with a USB C adapter on it. It could be my phone's usb port however (samsung 9+ so not too old) but I'm not sure. Wireless just gets around this altogether.
