A Jeep Gladiator Forum member has posted this photo of a Jeep Gladiator Diesel prototype, showing its fuel fillers for the first time.
What you can see in this photo are both the diesel fuel filler and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) filler receptacles. Why the need for DEF? FCA’s EcoDiesel V6 engine is equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). That means the EcoDiesel requires the use of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The 3.0L EcoDiesel is a true clean diesel engine and requires the use of DEF.
Under the most ideal driving conditions, an 8-gallon urea tank is supposed to have a fill interval of every 10K miles, i.e., fill it with the oil change and tire rotation. In real world usage, the 8 gallons of DEF lasts much less than that. DEF is generally available, but not available even in portable containers everywhere diesel is sold. DEF comes two ways. One is in 1-gallon or 2 ½-gallon containers. DEF is also available at the pump at many truck stop pumps, but direct from the nozzle may require a separate prepay. The RAM 1500 EcoDiesel dash has a separate DEF fuel gauge, which is helpful to plan ahead for filling up with DEF.
