Is it necessary to remove the tensioner when changing from steel cable to synthetic rope on Badlands 12000 LB winch

I am changing to synthetic to take some weight off the front of the Jeep. I also prefer synthetic to steel cable and run synthetic on my 93 YJ. I googled and watched videos, etc. I found a video that requires you to remove the tensioner and another video where they kept it on. It would be much easier to keep it on, if it truly is not an issue. It is apparent that the PO never used the winch. The roller fairleads are smooth and appear new. I will swap to a hawse fairlead.

Remove the tensioner as it will crush the synthetic rope. Also make sure you get a good 6-7 tight wraps on the drum before you add load to tension the rope.

Thanks for the info. I will do that. Also, removing only the tensioner springs is also not an option?

You can do that but then the rollers would be useless.

With synthetic line you guide it left or right and it will wrap itself with the tension.
