As are most of those old texts and superstitions. I'm no biblical scholar but the number/letter reference comes from the original Greek biblical texts in which the Greeks often used letters as numbers as did the Hebrews. This leads to the "Nero" theory in which the letters used in the Greek and Hebrew texts could really be referencing Nero Caesar. HISTORY is fascinating, especially when you take the hocus pokus out of it!

EXACTLY. The translations were often not quite perfect.

I'm no scholar either, but it's fascinating for sure. So when something was translated from original Greek to Hebrew and then to English, the term "something was lost in translation" often applies. Especially since like you said -the same written character could be a number or a letter, depending.........
(sticking to historical facts here, no intent on anything else............)
One has to look at what was going on at that time, historically speaking, the languages used.....

With my wife being a quilter, I learned how quilts were made to show safe passages for slaves in the 1800s. Code. Different shapes and patterns had different meanings, but to others, "it's just a star pattern".

Once I got out of the headwind, and slowed to ~65mph, my average mileage went up to 18mpg, and that's with the last 150 miles of a 2700 mile trip at the, "Improved," conditions.
