My JT has 3.73s in Dana 44 axles front and rear..

Back in my drag racing days I set up a ton of differentials. I know very well how to do a gear swap and set up.

My question is more about the carriers in our Jeep Dana 44s. I know a lot of people throw in 4.88s and 5.13s....will a 3.73 carrier accept those gears? The issue is the tiny pinion requires the carrier to move closer towards it. Back in my racing days when going to higher numerical gears, like a 4.10 or 4.56....which is a lot in a drag car....we'd use different carriers, thicker ring gears, or just shim the snot out of one side to make up the difference. This Dana/Jeep thing is new to me though. The Dana 44 was not a popular axle for drag racing in those days.

Are the Dana 44 Jeep ring gears thicker to make up that difference when using a small pinion like for a 4.88 or 5.13 set?

There is no carrier break for the Advantek D44. Same carrier for all ratios.

You're thinking is correct, the ring gets thicker as the ratio get deeper.
