Only the skin wrinkled. Even the tail gate lines up perfectly straight if one can go by the shot of the rear. Appears from pics that it just wrinkled the top half of the left side of the box and didn't even shove it in. I'd wonder, but bet, inside the box the dimensions are still "square". These are pretty tough boxes for a small light truck.
Also appears as if the damage "diminishes" ahead of the wheel to where it's only the very top part of the box side.
Still cool that the left side of the tailgate to body gap is really quite straight and true. I wonder- and would almost bet, the tail gate still works ok.
Totally missed the cab - Amazing - and lucky.

I hate people. You said drunk, so you went out or the cops told you later?

The tailgate only opens about a quarter of the way, I had to try to re secure the tauno cover. The rail inside the bed it attached to is split though. Yeah he slid to a stop just before the cab.

It may be due to the shock behind the tail light. There's a cylinder in there, a mini hood or hatch cylinder, that controls the tail gate speed. Seeing as how that tail light area is crushed, MAYBE it's that cylinder. Just a guess based on the single picture and not trying to look really close.
Still it's impressive how little damage was done (yeah, as the non-owner sitting here looking at pictures ouch) the biggest take-away - your snow had to have helped - AND better yet, you were NOT there walking to or away from your truck! It's another "things can be fixed, people, not so easily" thing. If he HAD to drink and drive (and listen to that horrible music!) at least it was then - and there. (no one HAS to, they CHOOSE to)

I'm gonna guess a replacement bed is cheaper than the labor to pull that all out ?
Not a chance in the world would I accept body work over a new bed for the criminally negligent act he did…not a chance. You no longer have a non wrecked truck. Make sure you at least get some diminished value added into your settlement.

Just don’t drink and drive people. Keep that online BAC calculator handy and multiply your number by 1.2 (or more) for a safety factor. Even if it’s under but close to 0.08 then just wait an hour and calculate again.

Thank goodness OP didn’t have a kid or someone else running out to the truck to grab something when this happened.

I was asleep at the time in the house thankfully. Of course the drunk listening to blasting opera was perfectly fine. Poor jeep took it in the back driver side as his rav4 rolled. Just missed the front half. I guess I should thank the piles of snow from my snowblower for slowing him down some.

Bad Deal! Gotta look out for yer trucks true value! That first scratch is always the worst on a newer truck!

I know it's already been said, but it's amazing to me the outcome wasn't much worse. It's so close to the front it looks like a breeze in the right direction could've almost moved him into the cab during the crash. No humans or pets harmed either - that's something to be very thankful for. I'm very sorry that this happened to your very cool truck though.

I can't imagine how a grown adult could sit in a restaurant or bar and drink themselves into that condition, knowing full well that they're gonna have to get themselves home.
