They can be locked open, but driving that way would put quite a load on the spindles and bumper. We don't recommend driving with the carriers open.
Safety chains attach underneath on a bracket. About 5-6" of drop over stock. We are going to be offering a way to mount the plate in the tire on the carrier as well. We have not researched local plate laws. If that is something that people are getting ticketed for in your area then this may not...
The hitch is crazy strong. We aren't really high enough volume to justify getting it rated, but on paper, the forces are better managed than even the factory hitch. I use the same setup on my Tacoma with a ~4,500 camper and a weight-distribution hitch and it doesn't even flex a measurable amount.
We don't have a trail camera on our Gladiator. It will be similar to what this user posted. The fish eye helps a lot, but the hoop will block some.

We've found the universal awning brackets that come with most awnings to work fine. Or you can run to your local hardware or home store and get some pretty useful right angle brackets in various sizes.
