I would always walk it first or have a long stick to feel out the bottom. It's not just depth, I want to know what the surface is like and if I am going to encounter any big boulders, holes, logs etc. Algae covered rock is worse than ice.
There are so many other electronic failure modes aside from the transmission that your choice in that department has little bearing on reliability. Between throttle by wire and the myriad sensors, just look at the aux battery issues, we are beholden to electronics for better and worse...
For dry lubricant (so as not to load up with grit and become an abrasive) I have been keen on the ZYP hBn. I believe it has better adhesion to the metal and forms a more durable coating than graphite but the same idea.
It's not cheap but I keep a can around and find interesting uses for it...
Great truck, I'm sure you'd love it. I have a 22' Rubi 3.6 and seriously considered the diesel but I have issues with DEF, fuel pump concerns, payload limitations and the overheating de-rate. The diesel is probably a better ride day to day but for practicality I think the 3.6 is still the winner.
I had the fortune to learn to drive in a 95' XJ Sport. The JT is the aesthetic child of the wrangler lineage but in terms of driving experience I think the XJ is a good close comparison. The feel of the longer wheelbase, solid axles and compact boxy greenhouse evoke the XJ.
That's a...
Old news but if you really want portal axles, get a hmmwv from GSA. Great vehicles off road but shit to drive otherwise. For half the cost of a set for the jeep you could have a turnkey (err lever). Plus, you really can beat them to shit without regard. The width is a bit much though for...
Yeah, that is brutal looking even though in all likelihood it's an easy cleanup. My bed would be a wreck without the liner, well spent money for sure. Frankly it should be standard with option to delete on any truck.
I feel you there.. I knew I needed a better reverse light but wanted to test one out so I spent 15 minutes fabricating one from a Chinesium pod light (https://www.harborfreight.com/3-in-led-flood-light-64322.html) and a cheap 7-pin connector for an investment of $30.
The flush mount versions...
Well you at least still have a gladiator frame buried in there so the spirit remains. Let us know if you need a recovery when you get stuck on the trail ;)
Another thought, coming from a car (forester via jetta) it is nice to have a vehicle that I can be rougher with again. Our roads can be garbage and I am much less apprehensive hitting potholes and bumps with the jeep vs the old IFS cars. Then it's nice to be able to throw bricks and propane...
For sure, this was my quick fast and dirty solution. Long term I'm going to put in flush mount bumper lights like diode dynamics. I used the trailer plug since the 7-pin has a dedicated backup lamp lead.
