The Ford tuning on old Explorers sent 5% of torque to the front wheels, to tune in more understeer. Having added a power switch to turn off the relay that powered the electronic clutch, I can verify that there is virtually no loss of mileage with AWD on an already heavy vehicle (body on frame)...
They are ignorant and confused about 4Hi vs 4Auto. Many car people don't understand how transfer cases work and the distinctions between them, and have misconceptions about the effect of front and rear driveshafts on the overall drivetrain. It's like they heard something once and didn't...
What tire pressure are you running? We named our JTR Tigger because of how bouncy the ride was, but dropping tire pressure to 35 PSI helped a lot. 35's finished calming things down.

This is a drag, we were getting in before deer season opened but after Labor Day.
Nothing like a big overreaction or anything. Sheesh.
" By temporarily reducing the numbers of people on national forests, we hope to minimize the...
My brother in law/best friend for 35 years has had amazing results rebuilding old Coleman lanterns and stoves. He's made a habit of going to my Dad's on Saturday mornings to make coffee on one of his projects - while I'm at the Farmer's Market buying goodies for Sunday dinners at my house.
If...
Both my Mom & Dad have two fake knees, once I put the ACE rocksliders on with grab handles on the rollbar and seatbacks, they can get in to my JTR with relatively little grief.
Hips, I don't know, hopefully not going to be a thing. For my petite wife, the sliders worked out GREAT. Not sure if...
I got t-boned in my 97 Ranger by a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis (think Crown Vic). The very aged driver had to dodge stopped traffic to run the red light to hit me. My head hit the driver side glass hard enough to ring my bell such that I don't remember counter steering through the 400 degree spin...
I run down to 17-18 PSI on my stock rims and 315/70R17 KO2's. That seems to be the sweet spot for this combination. On my old YJ with 33x10.5 KM2's and 8" steel wheels, 10 PSI was fine. But, I had to drive on pavement one time to a gas station to air back up when my compressor failed, that SUCKED!
We were in SF the beginning of August, we were staying on Union Square but walked up the hill to have a drink at the Top of the Mark. Seeing container ships stacked up waiting to get into the Port of Oakland was a severe eye opener.
The inelastic sectors of the economy can't accommodate the...
One of the earliest mods I did were the ACE sliders, for my 5'3" wife, for my peace of mind off-road, and for the aluminum skins on the door!
Many moons ago, the Porsche 928 introduced aluminum door skins and they cost a FORTUNE to repair. Can't really do rock sliders on a grand touring car...
All those airbags are passive restraints because STUPID PEOPLE DON'T WEAR THEIR SEATBELTS. You're not going to be rolling with your children or you jumping around the interior of the vehicle, regardless of which it is.
Seatbelts prevent injury and death to a spectacular degree. It's still noted...
Yes, the later model Highlanders are MUCH bigger than they used to be, but are a Camry pan for the unibody.
The IRS designs give much more packaging flexibility for the body on frame SUV's.
Have you been in modern large SUV's? Not the unibody cars. The new GM's have IRS and much lower rear floor levels. The Fords and Nissans have had IRS for fifteen years or more for the same reason. The interior room is very well designed for 7-Up on a number of different platforms.
Mini-van...
Wow that is a BUMMER. My BIL is still angry a dozen years after shuffling off his Expedition to Carmax because the camshaft phasers were a fundamentally flawed design. I can't believe it's still a thing.
They switched to an Armada, kids and a boat to tow to a mountain lake, really good results...
Yeah, the windshield in my YJ is so old it has vertical drip stains.
Ironically, it's the improved aerodynamics of the JL/JT compared to the old Jeeps that make this SO common.
And yes, in 10 months, my HGP glass has taken hits and kept right on being a windshield. Totally worth it.
I had something like that happen with traction control on going up a hill-climb at Hungry Valley. I turned off traction control and did the climb again, no problem. Stupid computers!
It was a specific combination of a LONG climb on a looser surface, though it was no problem to stop on the hill...
