  1. Oil - going from 0w20 to 0w40

The 2012 3.6 was not the same 3.6 as used in current Jeeps, it was the Classic Pentastar (no Variable Valve Lift). It was designed with 5w30 oil specified, and then switched to 5w20 around the '12 or '13 model year. The Pentastar Upgrade engine has always had 0w20 oil specified, it has many...
  2. Thoughts after Two Months of Ownership

I definitely need the three beeps when leaving it running with the door closed. Otherwise I would probably leave it running, not hearing the engine. I have left other Pentastar powered vehicles running because of not hearing them. Fuel mileage is good enough to suit me, about 17.5 to 18 mpg...
  3. Sunrider owners - MY mess-up, or theirs?

Good plan, taking a break from it. When you go back to it, you might see the problem from a different perspective.
  4. Sunrider owners - MY mess-up, or theirs?

At this point, I would definitely put the ball in the dealership court. Since you have been a regular, faithful customer, they surely will want to take care of it for you. At least, I would if I were in their position. A happy customer is worth more than a couple of door seals.
  5. Sunrider owners - MY mess-up, or theirs?

That is how I tighten mine when I install it. As for directions (and products as well) not being updated, typical Mopar way of (not) doing things. Even the new Hurricane engine has poor details in it's service documents. It takes a while to get updated, for some reason.
  6. engine replacement advice request

CAI is an acronym for Cold Air Intake. What it really is is a sound effects kit. Plenty of noise, no appreciable difference in power.
  7. engine replacement advice request

I don't think planned obsolescence is the goal here. I believe that it is mostly the relationship of Stellantis with it's vendors here. Also, the 3.6 is still used in trucks, SUVs, and Jeeps, with no viable replacement in sight. Even the Ramcharger will use the 3.6 to power it's range extender...
  8. engine replacement advice request

Logical reasoning there about the cams interchangeability. But, as of last Wednesday, the backorder was 27,000, according to one of the other techs in our shop. He is still waiting on a cam that he ordered back in December or January. I am of the opinion that instead of releasing cams into the...
  9. engine replacement advice request

Probably, but since we get parts by VIN, we just hand over the repair order to the catalog department (formerly known as the parts department) and add another backorder to the ones already in the system. I know some guys who have swapped cams around out of different PUGs with no problem, so...
  10. Sunrider owners - MY mess-up, or theirs?

I just looked at mine. It is a '22, so the seals might be different. But I do know that the gap above the doors is at least as even as with the Freedom Panels. Also, mine has been on and off several times over the past three years, and it has always lined up the same. You may need to get the...
  11. engine replacement advice request

I had a couple friends (they were brothers) who would do a sort of verbal diagnosis (they debated about what failed) of mechanical problems in their cars back in the day, rather than actually do the diagnosis that would tell them for sure what was wrong. Of course, I could tell them what was...
  12. engine replacement advice request

I agree about the MIL, if it comes on I want to know why, then repair it before a little issue becomes a bigger issue. Head gasket leakage seems to be an issue with the PUG engine, I have studied and repaired enough of them to be familiar with it. In fact, I have a Pacifica coming in next...
  13. engine replacement advice request

I have seen many 3.6 "ticking" issues that were the result of a high lift rocker/high lift cam lobe failure. Although it is possible for that to cause a misfire, in reality I have always found that it doesn't set a DTC. Why? Because the engine spends the vast majority of it's time running in...
  14. engine replacement advice request

I would definitely go with a Mopar reman engine. The warranty is longer than the warranty on a new engine (unless it has changed recently). There is nothing wrong with a new engine either, except for the cost. Used engines are each unique, you may get a great low mileage engine or one that was...

I thought the oil viscosity causes engine failure issues were settled a couple of dozen oil threads back. Got to love the internet influencers, they don't seem to have a real job, just muddying the waters of truth.
  16. The 3.6 Tick Bites Trail Recon at 31,000 Miles

I have watched the oil pressure build from a hot start (ESS restart) where the engine had been auto stopped for long enough to completely lose oil pressure. Oil pressure on a start, hot or cold, builds faster than the gauge can show it. There isn't a dry start problem in these engines in regular...
  17. The 3.6 Tick Bites Trail Recon at 31,000 Miles

It gets even better, also re-engineering the oiling system.
  18. The 3.6 Tick Bites Trail Recon at 31,000 Miles

Of course it will fail. My sanity is intact, I just hated to replace a running engine.
  19. The 3.6 Tick Bites Trail Recon at 31,000 Miles

I tried the "dry run" test several years ago on a 3.6 Classic Pentastar (no Variable Valve Lift). The engine was condemned by an aftermarket warranty company for noise, and another tech pulled the upper intake manifold, a valve cover and the oil pan. Then the repair order came to me, with...
  20. The 3.6 Tick Bites Trail Recon at 31,000 Miles

I was only kidding about the Teflon coating. I work on Jeeps for a living, I have worked on 3.6 Pentastar and Pentastar Upgrade engines since they came out. There is no Teflon coating on the rockers, only on the bearings and piston skirts. The high lift rocker arms are hardened, not coated...
