once you remove the perforated carpet and the rubber drain plug underneath, the mat will 'snap' into the drain hole and you can put the drain plug directly on your floor mat.

I wouldn't call that 'exposed' if it's on the backside of a steel bumper. seems pretty protected from damage. Like others said, mud is your biggest concern, and not really much of one.

Ugh, tracing and troubleshooting wiring like this is a pita. I agree it's hard to screw up that installation it's just a couple plug connectors. The center of the dial is a button, I think the install had you put the button on? maybe not fully seated? Otherwise, yeah sounds like the module.
