My M38 had 7 slots, but I think the MB had 9. Pretty sure the M38 hadn’t been to Antarctica by ‘51. Maybe a CJ2 made it there. Personally, I think it’s a made up thing, but someone may prove me wrong.

I have a soft top TJ that I’ve puttered around with in the mountains of New Mexico, and my heater has always been able to keep up. But, a TJ is a heck of a lot smaller inside than a JKU or a JLU.
