One additional thing to consider with portal axles is wheel backspacing. Since the width of the portal boxes moves the tire out, away from the axle steering pivot point by several inches, you end up needing to run wheels with some pretty serious backspacing to get the tire back so it's center...
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I had a couple questions for those of you who have ARE CX HD caps.
I currently have a CX on the back of a 1st gen doublecab Tacoma. One of the big things I use it for almost daily is hauling bikes around. It keeps them somewhat securely locked up and...
I appreciate all of the replies! This definitely helps to understand what I'm getting myself into before I jump all the way in. Sounds like 65 with 4,800lb trailer is the way to go.
This maybe goes beyond the scope of this forum but how does that compare to a 1/2 ton? Obviously the 1/2 ton...
For additional context, I’ll use trailer brakes and a WDH with sway control. If necessary I’ll also add some airbags
I’ve read other threads and 65mph seems to be the consensus. I’m happy with that if that’s the reality. Will a stock Rubicon just flat out not go faster? Or does it start to...
How fast are you either able to tow (maxed out?) or feel comfortable towing?
My wife and I live in Salt Lake City and have always loved truck camping. We have two young kids now and my super old 1st gen Taco isn’t really cutting it anymore. A 3.6 Rubicon Gladiator towing a small trailer seems...
I see the JL test mule grille slots seem to be the same size. I highly doubt they will they will do this but here's to hoping a Hemi option will up the towing capacity by 1,000lbs or 2,000lbs....
I've read that cooling is the main towing concern but I'm sure weight and the soft suspension is...
Following the context of this thread, I was referring to a pass-through created by removing the entire pane of glass, not the tiny window in the middle. The total window area would make for a nice pass through. Look at the pass-through in post 27 where they removed all the glass. Do the same...
Here's how Maltec does it on some of their campers. Definitely wouldn't want to use this thing as a full time walkway but it would be nice to squeeze through when it's the middle of the night and storming outside and you realize you left your water bottle in the front seat cupholder.
For sure, a full, rv style pass through would mean cutting the passenger tub too. Cutting steel is not ideal. Definitely want to avoid that. How about just a reach-through!
ElCoyote,
I totally agree and understand where you're coming from if you're talking about a passthrough on a Tacoma or a Ram. Cutting the roof, which is part of the roll-over safety structure (and irreversible), is a huge can of worms! That's the difference between those trucks and the JT...
It would be interesting to have a cab pass-through in the Habitat similar to the old Toyota Dolphin RV's. That wouldn't be quite as fully usable as the J-30 but a Habitat with a pass-through into the cab of the truck is probably about as close as you could get with the JT. With the JT's...
