Just regeared to 5.13 at the best local shop around. They are not an off-road shop. The Tech asked me why I would regear (currently sitting on 37s), after he regeared, he took it out on the interstate and drove 80 mph… He also stated he could hear gear whining while in reverse, but it must be ā€œgears are spinning fasterā€. When I asked if he wanted to see it after break in, he seamed lost, basically didn’t know what I was talking about.. I drove it for the first time and had a severe whine on deceleration. I’m not sure if it’s the pinion bearing or pinion depth (would like some feedback on possible problems.) Thing is, I payed more than double the standard cost of a regear. I wonder if I should cut my losses and take it out of town to a more knowledgeable shop? *this is a good shop that treats everyone right! Just might not regear too many vehicles…
Interesting he would drive it at 80mph right out of the box like that. There is definitely a break in period. I had one of the best shops in SE Michigan do my K5 gears and lockers back in the early 90's and they also did a lock rite locker in my 96 ZR2 and they told me no highway, no towing, no heavy acceleration for the first 500-1000 miles and come back for an oil change.

Fast forward to this past summer, same shop, same owner (still had my name in his computer from those past 2 service orders) when my son's 2003 S10 ZR5 blew his rearend. They put factory 10 bolt 7.5" ring gear and pinion in 3:73's back in it and a new GM Gov Lok. Said exact same thing on break in but he said don't worry about the oil change. I questioned him on this as i thought it was mandatory for an oil change. He said not anymore. Especially with a bone stock rig. Right or wrong, I let it go and have had no issues as of yet (knock on wood). Most likely will drain the oil this summer as its only been about 3K miles he has put on it since the repair.

Sounds like maybe your noise could be from setting up a poor backlash on the gears. For sure would take it back and have them make it right before spending more money on another shop looking at it. You paid good money (and more from your comments), don't let them get away with not making it right.

I had a shop with a great reputation in NC do mine. I had a whine decelerating from 50-40. Took it back in and sure enough, out of spec. They did recommend changing fluids after 500 miles.
