We are not being paid for this or did we get anything for free. This was a real chance for us to reach out to a canvas company nearby and see if they could make an awning that did not shred and did not have to be folded up in storms. This is something that has happened to many we know with the retractable awnings... they just can't take the wind and heavy rain-hail-sleet-snow, the wind can destroy them very quickly. We drew the design, the canvas shop picked the sort of material we would need. They built a tough awning. Compact, it doesn't hit the trees and rock along the trail... because we can store it in a very small space! We will continue to test it this fall and winter... and report any flaws in the design.

We use adjustable poles to set it up on uneven ground situations and to lower areas for water run off. With clips across the whole tent- we can clip it on in seconds. Set a couple poles... and tighten it down. here is a review!

I like where you're going with this. I really like how you don't need to mount anything and it works deployed to either side, two things that I feel become important when you have the side opening clamshell type tents.

Any noise from the clips on the vehicle side at night? I wonder if a adjustable locking strap would be good there? Like a ladder lock strap or something similar.

I've been trying to come up with ideas for an awning on my truck. I have a half height bed rack right now, and a clamshell tent on the way. With having a 5ft bed and a half height rack every awning is too long to mount to the rack so you have to come up with some type of contraption to raise it up high enough to clear the cab, and then the way a clamshell tent opens the awnings often times get in the way.

I got really small s- hooks with latches to go between the D-rings on the tarp and the clips on the roofnest, I used rubber shrink wrap over the clips on the D-rings side. Even in strong winds the tarp was quiet. But it was tightly snugged down with the ratchet ropes on the poles. So if tightened... There is no noise! As far as different lengths and width... A custom shop like we used can make them to your desired size. The cost was just over 400 dollars for ours.... If we would have went for a less strong material, without all the reinforcement it would have been around 200.
