Hey all,

So need a sense check from people who are more savvy than me in electrical & DC to DC charging.

21JTR -I ran from the engine bay in triple guarded cabling (8gauge I think you call it over there) to add an Anderson plug in my tray (aka bed). I ran it from one of the 40A aux circuits and run fridge and compressor (35 max amp draw) when I need them in the bed. (aux switch set to ign on only)

I had an epiphany lol, well maybe not, but I was thinking why couldn’t I run a DC to DC charger off that 40A circuit I ran to the tray and charge a secondary battery. Having the Aux switch set on ign only should in essence isolate the circuit from the rest of the cars system when ign is off.

So looking around I can get a 25A DC to DC charger that will pull less than 40 amp (I understand the 25A is output, input draw is different but after checking the specs on these both should fall below 40A) so not to overload that circuit

or

Obviously add in a battery to charge and run the fridge, compressor etc of that extra battery allowing me greater amp draw (direct from second battery) for upgrading my compressor etc or other equipment later on

I do not want to mess with the main electrical system at this point in time and this ā€˜conceptually’ makes sense, to me anyway.

Appreciate any advice if this would be a workable solution for my needs.

Cheers

I am certainly not an electrical guru but I can strongly recommend using something like the Redarc BCDC charge controller. I am using the 1240 (I think).

They are made in Australia and their US support was very helpful when I was installing my setup. Here’s the instruction manual for how to set it up.

Keep in mind that it is crucial to properly fuse EVERYTHING. Redarc sells everything in a kit except for the wiring but tells you what size of wire to run for the length you need for your particular application.
