Anyone else have this issue?

Diesel Rubicon with 5k miles.
Been on sand a few times and in the sugary stuff I lock both hubs so 4L but the TC shifter won't stay planted.
Is it a linkage or cable?
Had a similar problem in my 89 Gran Marquis when the tranny was rebuilt. Eventually adjusted the linkage from low gear instead of park and it was fine.

My Mojave was very stiff going into 4L in the beginning. One of my first times using it it popped out because I believe it wasn't in all the way. I live in a rural area and would take it out for drives just to work it in and out of 4L. It was stiff at first and required some effort, it really loosened up and is easy now with kind of a positive feel when it drops in. I would drive it and cycle it in and out, worked for me.

Pretty sure you are not actually putting it in 4L: aka not pulling it back enough.
Well you were half right: it wasn't going into 4L but not because I wasn't pulling it back far enough; seems she likes to be rolling in order to lock into 4L.

Slightly rolling 1-2mph is often what it takes.

I can sometimes rock in my seat enough to move the beast allowing the gears to mesh and go into 4L.

I’m still getting used to the lever. I had it pop out of 4H a couple times this weekend. I may have knocked it trying to reach for something while it was parked. The user manual recommends moving 1-3 MPH in neutral to get it into 4L. So you really need to shift it before you get into a tough spot on the trail.

I don't know the equivalent on an automatic, but on the manual, if I'm not already moving, I can get it to go in by shifting to neutral, releasing the clutch, and then pressing the clutch again. I guess maybe if you shift to neutral then back to drive again, that might make it easier (if you're not already rolling).

I've got it now. Transfer case shifting is done in a slow roll in neutral and is very positive, then back in gear before it stops.
I think the diesel Rubicon transfer case might be over geared at 4:1 except for perhaps the most technical of rock crawling. I know on the trails if I'm in 4L then starting off in at least third gear is necessary or there isn't any momentum.

My favorite configuration for riding the trails is 4H in three-wheel drive, or as I like to call it: "The Mojave."

4L is reserved for water crossings and soft, sandy terrain only.

But it sure is a kick putting the tranny in gear in 4L; this thing feels like a tank that wants to twist itself into a pretzel.

Well yea. You need to be rolling with the vehicle in neutral to get into 4L.

This thread is reassuring.

I had my Rubicon in 4L for the first time a few weeks back when we had all that snow - I wanted it for the front & rear lockers.

It all seems like things were working, but 10 minutes into things the t-case shifts into neutral on me. I'd assumed it was because I didn't have it fully in 4L, but I'm glad to read I'm not the only person who made this mistake.

Gotta love Monday morning quarterbacks!
? new to jeeps im taking? This has been standard for over a decade for getting into 4L and engaging. Meaning there are thousand of posts on it on numerous forums. Cant say for sure about the manual if it states to be rolling less than 5mph, I gotta check and confirm that.

Once you get it down that 4L has to be hit on a roll in neutral and I wouldn't say forcing it but with a purposeful motion, then it's all good.
Now if I see a spot coming up I think'll need it, I go neutral, 4L, drive, then stop and pick my line. Been working great like that since.

Of course - not my first Jeep;)

The JT just seems pickier than the others, or I used them enough that I forgot how picky they were too original, because I don’t remember having this problem before.

This is my first Jeep and first automatic 4WD, and I haven't been 'wheeling since my youth several decades ago.
So there's a few things I have to learn and relearn. ;)
