It's okay to have a line to the left or the right edge (heel or toe) of your pattern, and okay if the pattern isn't centered left to right on the tooth. But if the pattern has a sharp line deep in the tooth on the root or is running off the top edge of the tooth, your pinion is too deep or too shallow, respectively.

Looks like you're getting a consistent pattern though which speaks good of the rest of your setup including backlash and preload.

Is this too deep or too shallow? It still has the harsh line which indicates it's too deep, but it seems like the pattern is too close to the face, which indicates it's too shallow.

This time the “harsh” line at the root/base of the tooth seems to be paint being thick down there, rather than from the pinion gear rubbing in a flat line at the root of the tooth, if that makes sense. The arc I’ve drawn shows the edge of the pattern the pinion is making, which is not a harsh flat line.

I cannot tell from the photo alone if it’s too shallow, but you can try this trick to determine: wipe a Q-tip outwards as if wiping between the two parallel lines I drew. If there’s a “gap” between where the pinion gear rubbed off the paint and the top edge of the tooth, then it isn’t too shallow.
