So I just had an incredibly pedantic long, pretty much involuntary discussion/lecture, on ham being the way to go.
You can pick up a baofeng hand held ham and unless you’re in the antarctic, hit repeaters. Dude demonstrated while I was out in tecate. Gmrs isn’t super different from 2 meter ham, but the support is minimal. You won’t find repeaters anywhere, ymmv depending on local operators. There are some repeaters in my area but you better be hand held, you can’t get em from the valleys. Also ham is 1/4 the cost…. Trade off being a “test” which all the answers are available for.

I use the QYT for HAM & GMRS !!! Same thing for the handheld Baofeng

Technically not legal. But yea. It’s semantic as long as you stay within watt limits
