Hey all -

What we originally thought was a shot starter is not actually the issue. Starter is perfectly fine and quiet on the bench. No grinding of gears at all.

I am going to put it back in tomorrow; however, I now am not sure what the hesitation to turn over and the grinding noises could be. Not the alternator as that generally doesn't produce a noise. Truck has 2500km on it. Shops around here are slammed so waiting around to diagnose isn't ideal.

I can try a private non dealer shop but figured I would see if anyone had any additional suggestions?

Bench testing a starter without a load is not always going to show what is wrong vs. installed and under load.

You could have a marginal commutator segment, , brushes, bad field winding or even a mechanical issue with the bendix gear that engages.

There is not much to starters themselves other than checking to make sure there is no missing or chip teeth on either the flywheel side of the engine and/or the bendix gear side that engages the flywheel to turn the engine over.

Might also want to have your batteries load tested to make sure they are supplying enough CCA.

Does the Pentastar use a gear reduction starter?
