They were cheap ones that were cracked off of a website. I bed-lined them, drilled them, and matched the screw heads that are used on the homemade topper. Kind of tied them to the rest of the truck... all in about 20 bucks.

Good memories seeing the video. Love the Black Rock area. Have been up and down High Rock Canyon, up and down the playa, across the Applegate Trail (north end of the playa from Imlay to Cedarville) probably a dozen times.

There are some nice hot springs near Soldier Meadows, one usable hot spring near Black Rock, and one on the east side of the playa. Bunch of side routes in the area worth exploring. The wildlife refuge north of the playa, out towards Denio, is worth exploring as well.

One of my buddies used to belong to a rocket club. They launch huge homemade rockets out there in the playa most years. June I believe. They have to get FAA permits as they are going up thousands of feet. They then spend the following week with aerospace engineering students, helping them with their grad projects.

Some things on the playa and High Rock Canyon...
* You got it right later in the video, but the first comment of 'play-ya' made me cringe. It is 'ply-ya'.

* When you get home, thoroughly wash your rig! Especially the underside. The alkaline salts in the playa will rust metal. It also reacts to plastic, making it brittle. Not immediate; a slow death kind of thing.

* Excellent advice on 'if you start sinking, turn around'. Can't tell you how many times I have seen folks stuck up to their frames in the mud. The surface can be dry, but it is nasty, foul smelling, soul-sucking goop just a few inches down in places. Check with the guys at the gas station in Gerlach or call the ranger station in town to get the latest on what locations to avoid. The last several years have been much wetter than normal.

* If you do get stuck in the mud, they will also connect you with the local in Gerlach who has a tractor and a Cat that may be able to get you out. Pricey, but not outrageous fee for that service.

* My first trip on the Applegate, north end of the playa, we came across a family in a F150 that had driven out onto the playa just a couple hundred yards off the trail. Buried to the frame. It took four very equipped, very experience rigs, daisy-chained together, to get the truck out. A whole lot of digging too! The family had been out there for over a day with just snacks and a little water. It had been a miserable day and night for mom and kids and I am sure dad never heard the end of it. Lucky we came along.

* High Rock Canyon is closed from Feb 1 through the middle of May. Raptors and bighorn breeding season. May is the best time to visit this area. Not too hot. Stuff is blooming. Better chance of seeing the antelope and bighorns. October through December is good too, but it will be cold! We have been snowed on at Black Rock in October.

Thanks! The bolt head design thing kinda matches the look I’m going for with Bandit. I’ll probably end up going with whatever gives me the coverage I want and have them bed lined when I do the rest of the vehicle. Window armor!!!!!
