Searched and searched and never really found what I was looking for, so maybe this will help somebody like me.
*there is nothing profound in here....just 1 man's account and reasons to regear*
The Short and Skinny
Shifts like stock, runs smooth through the gears, 8th gear is back in action at hwy speeds. 2200 ish RPMs at 70mph in 8th
The Long and Fat
Why 4.88s vs 4.56s vs 5.13s?
I considered all three. I have 35x10.50 Nittos on stock Rubicon rims. I have an Alu-Cab Explorer Canopy, and a Slide-Master bed slide. My bed has around 3-400lbs in it at any given time. I also have steel front and rear bumpers, winch, solar, 13 gal water tank, spare battery, tool boxes, etc. So, why 4.88s? Well, ultimately it has to do with weight. If I had a naked gladiator and was regearing just to run 35s....4.56s all day would be my guess. But,....BUTTTTT..if there is an inkling of an idea that you may tow, or go heavy on accessories, then I can't imagine going anything less than 4.88s. So why not 5.13s? Well, like everybody I expect my gladiator to do a little bit of everything. It's a daily driver, its a hunting truck, it hauled me to Colorado on a road trip, and I sometimes tow with it. 4.88s for me where right in the middle of where I needed to be.
How does it drive?
Here is what nobody wants to hear, but is the truth. There is absolutely no insane increase in torque, acceleration, power, etc. It runs smoother because it allows the transmission to do its job closer to the way it was when stock. I have to really hammer on it if I want it to go above 4k rpms. It will cycle through the gearing until it finds one that makes it happy. That's the goal, right? At least it was for me. Hwy speeds are also great. 8th gear seems to be the unicorn we are all chasing, even though it can really be thought of as a 2nd overdrive. I get it though...I have 8..I wanna use 8. So, 4.88s, in my configuration..(remember..my shit is heavy) work great for me. I think 5.13s would've been overkill and probably gotten the RPMs into a range I don't like...but I'm also not a mechanic...just a dude on the internet. Hope this info helps in your decision if you're thinking about regearing.
