I have a soft top, and I'd like to be able to carry my long canoes (15-17') centered over the cab by using a chase rack in the back and some sort of support over the front of the windshield. This would leave my soft top easily available once I drop the canoes off at the lake.
Would the cheaper a-pillar supports made for light bars that mount to the cowl on the back of the hood hold a few hundred pounds? Would they likely deform the cowl? I don't know what those bolts on the cowl actually go into.
Would mounting a crossbar to something like this (from Z offroad) work?
I know this front hoop from Adventure Rack System is out there, but I wouldn't want to use the bars that run from the front hoop to the back rack. Plus it looks very noisy on the road, and it's expensive.
For the truck bed support, I was thinking something like this (but at right height to clear the soft top):
Any thoughts?
