Ive driven my mojave 5,789 miles (it had some when I bought it, total 6113 miles) and I have logged every tank of gas through the FillUp app.
My avg statistics are as follows:
15.6 mpg
5789 miles driven, 827 per month
385.85 gallons of gas purchased, 55 per month.
$974 total cost, $139 per month
average fuel price (was) $2.53 per gallon.

Now for fun I am trying to see if a diesel would work out better.
I obviously dont know what my mpg average would be but lets presume, based on everyone else 27 mpg
5789 miles / 27 mpg= 214.41 gallons. Diesel is the same price as gas here (at least currently) but lets say it was .10 higher (which seems typical). 214.41 * 2.63 = $563.90 spent on fuel
Jeep claims DEF every 10k but Ive read people needing it alot sooner I'll guess 2.5 gallons of DEF is $10, it needs 5.1 right so lets just say $20, lets say I had to do it twice for $40.
And lastly one oil change, they are what $140 (on the high side)?
563.90 + $40 def + $140 oil change = 743.9.

the diesel is a $4k option (I dont count the transmission because both autos are $2k)
974 (cost of just gas total) - $744 (projected diesel cost, def and oil change) = $230 difference
It would take just over 17 months for $230 to pay for the 4k diesel option.

My truck is paid off and I am looking pretty hard at a lesser trim base model diesel. I dont drive all that much, in fact I wouldnt have had that many miles if I hadnt drove to indiana once and columbus ohio twice. I have a very small offroad trailer I tow, it is easily forgotten when behind my mojave. (I can pick it up and move it). My biggest wants are tank/fuel range and less of a need to regear if I went bigger tires, also torque is good.
I dont hate the gas/auto its really nice imo but I have to drive like a grandpa just to get any sort of range out of the tank.

Am I crazy? Am I missing something? If I got the trade in numbers to work in my favor I wonder if I could come out ahead at all?

Only if you’re driving 5789 miles per month. Check your math!

oh its entirely possible my math is off. lol
Which part are you saying is incorrect? Basically I just tried to substitute diesel mpg into what the app had come up with for gas.

Your $230 savings was calculated over the total miles you’ve driven, 5789, which is 7 months of driving, not 1. So it would take you 7 times longer than 17 months to break even.

What’s funny, my last fill in my Mojave was at 5795 miles, all fills recorded on “Simply Auto” app, and my overall average mpg is 15.99!
Our results are remarkably similar, I DON’T drive like a grandpa, and it is a good mix of short and long trips.

Anyone that believes their dash mileage readout needs to actually check it! I have had the dash read as much as 1.9 mpg more than actual! It is almost always higher than actual, but once it was dead on and once actual was .2 mpg more than dash computer!

The diesel would probably be great, but I like the 3.6 with 4:10’s and the auto.

And 27mpg with the EcoDiesel is being very optimistic, especially if you’re only getting ~15 with the gas.

The fact that you can’t get 4:10’s with the diesel unless you get the rubicon is lame.

The Rubicon diesel does not come with 4.10s, only the gasoline engine does. For diesel they swap those out for 3.73s
