I purchased a " truck extender" from Northern Tool. It fits into your hitch. Easy to use and works great. I should have bought this year's ago.

This would really work best for 14' or less. Rated for 500 lb and very adjustable for plywood or kayaks.

I took the lazy route. Your way probably makes more sense.

I used one of those for my old Ranger, bought at Harbor Freight. Makes a huge difference, especially offroad where long items want to slide out of the bed.

No 16' beams were used on the pole barn, just 12', but same idea.
