If I'm on a hill, I set the e brake when I'm in neutral, then let off the brake then put it in park.
That way the truck is hanging on the e-brake and not the parking pawl inside the transmission.
Its how I was taught. I don't know if its necessary anymore. But its what I do and it can't hurt.
My experience with this is that if the brake isn't nearly all the way up, the truck will slip. That's ok really because there is still much less pressure on the parking pawl. But the e-brake in this truck is certainly underwhelming.
