How do you know how much off set you need with any given lift?

Many suspension companies list a backspacing measurement, but this actually varies depending on whether you have wider Rubi/Max Tow axles, and what size tires you will be running. Discount Tire has recommended a minimum of +30 offset, but that isn't lift/tire specific.
