Parking Brake Handle Removal

My leather trimmed parking brake handle was gashed and I’m trying to replace it. I picked up a used leather handle grip off eBay for way cheaper than replacing the whole assembly. I’ve read where others have swapped their vinyl handles to leather so I know it’s possible and I’ve already sorted out how to do the swap minus how to get the release button off. I’ve seen it mentioned, but no actual detailed response as to how to remove the release button.

Does anyone know how to get the release button off without damaging it?

I’ve seen that post as well as others, still no mention of disassembling the handle. There have been post by others that they have successfully disassembled the handle, it wasn’t easy they stated, but that is the extent of what they have said unfortunately.
