I’m trying to decide what size propane tank(s) to buy for my portable home generator (dual fuel). I want to be able to haul them in the Gladiator for filling, off-gridding, etc. So they can’t be too heavy or too tall. 40-pound tanks might be the limit, I’m not sure.

Also looking for advice on strapping tactics. Has anyone mounted a tank horizontally in their bed or on a rack in a semi-permanent way?

I have only seen propane tanks used in upright position (other than forklifts and vehicle use). So for use that kind of sets the mounting. Standard sizes makes it easier to get filled for me (then when due hydro) I just swap out at stores that have prefilled tanks. I have 5 standard "BBQ" size 2 on RV, 1 on BBQ, 2 on standby / to run "Buddy heater" I know someone that has a compact tank for 5-7 lbs propane tank for camping it cost more than a standard size one. The 100 "lbs" tanks or larger (filled by propane Co.) are great for filling once a year but I'd only want to have them for fixed use.... Like static use home, permanent camp and stand by generator. Not any help with anything but getting a BBQ tank filled or moving it is easy, strapping one down is fairly easy. Not going to last long on a generator though. I normally get tanks filled when I have 3 empty, unless one is out of date. Then I swap out just it, in swapped out tanks you normally don't get a full tank.

Wow, tanks a lot! I went with two 40-pounders and will find some vertical bed mounts.
