When I see trucks out on the road with these on, I, nearly, always think how stupid their vehicle looks as a result. There has to be a practical argument about why these are worth the investment, etc. What are your thoughts? Over the Christmas holiday we took our Jeep Commander with racks attached to visit family and haul presents back. That's a scenario where I could see the value in a cap. We have two little one's and two dogs so taking the JT on this trip would have been a pain. Help me out.; I tend to associate these caps with my grandpa's truck, which I don't want to emulate. Also, I wouldn't need this for work, etc. as I am a desk employee so I am looking for insight for those who don't need to haul tools, overlanding, etc.

Yea I think people absolutely do this for hauling taller items, storing a lot of gear or work equipment in a weatherproof and more private way, etc. If you had a hard one, seems like it would be a pain to take the whole roof off, or maybe you never would. I like the idea of the soft ones though because they seem pretty easy to take on and off and would store a lot easier, plus you can roll up the sides and just use the top as a canopy/shade. The Softopper is cheaper than some tonneau covers, can't sell my wife on "needing" it though lol

Secure, water resistant storage is the answer for me and while I used to have the same opinion as you, they've grown on me.

IMO once you have one and realize how great it is to be able to just throw whatever smelly, muddy crap you have in the bed, you'll never go back. Getting home after a trip, locking the truck, and walking inside is a great feeling.

I had a hard cap on my Ford back in the day. It was useful for keeping stuff in but made the bed useless for tall loads not to mention killing gas mileage and speed with the weight and bad aerodynamics.

A large amount of weatherproof storage. The bed on the JT leaves a lot to be desired in terms of space. Due to weather and the bed being open the last few times I have hauled something has been with my mini-van and not truck. I can see how somebody would need a cap to get by, especially if they rely on it as their only vehicle. The lack of space is the same reason the JT didn't get to come to the beach this summer, a cap would have put it close to on par with the van lol
