Back when coon skins had value (yes I'm THAT old) the preferred shot with a .22 behind the ear.
Yes, there was still some thrashing about and falling from trees screaming (hunting with coon dogs, coons were treed) but usually by the time they impacted the ground they were dead.
You could live trap them and then point blank range behind the ear.
