Define "small".

Basecamp is there smallest, followed by Bambi.

Both are 3500gvwr and you would be more than fine even accounting for 40's, I would think. But payload is always the problem with these trucks.

I suspect your gvw is on the high side as you sit with out the trailer, kids, gear, wife's purse, beer ect.

The flyingcloud gets to 6000gvwr as there next smallest and here I would see issues. Not only with performance but hitch weight and payload as well.

Of course any wreck big enough to warrant a full on investigation is big enough that travel trailer is a pile of kindling so good luck getting an accurate weight of exactly how much I was towing anyway. This debate has gone on on forums for years and I've yet to see one example of a denied claim. Even if you're illegally towing over the limit, you're still covered. Just like if you're driving over the speed limit, made an unsafe lane change, or even if you're drunk. Insurance covers illegal and stupid both, which is pretty much the cause of every accident anyway.

Sure, but the whole liability and insurance coverage is flat wrong. You are covered period. Load up a 10k pounds trailer and run through a school bus, you're still covered (obviously your coverage limit isn't high enough and you could still end up screwed). Load up the same trailer and someone else causes an accident, you still aren't at fault or liable. You're at fault if you're at fault, 5 pound trailer or 50k pounds. You're not at fault if you're not at fault even if you're over loaded.
