Lets say I was daydreaming about taking the JT on vacation to unknown lands. What's the best way to find good places to go off road out of state?

Best way is to find local club - Unfortunately other than Public lands BLM managed / State and Fed parks - any good exploration is going to be held pretty tightly to preserve access /

How far are you going? I like to go to arizona, utah, colorado, New mexico, closer to home Kentucky Tennessee, Georgia just depends on what you want, how remote, and your comfort level. Start by using all trails and free camping on line for a start on plannng.
