Now that the Gladiator “reveal” (boo) is behind us, let’s check-in on the potential UAW strike, authorized for tomorrow, Thursday 9/14 (contracts expire at midnight tonight). So far, as of Wednesday morning, no agreements have been made and they’re planning to strike all three makers using specific plants (a first time strategy) to hit ‘em where it hurts best, apparently.

Selfishly, I’m annoyed because inflation finally was coming under control overall and I don’t want prices to go back up (more than I want these guys to get 4-day workweeks and pension plans; fair wages are good tho), and because I’m still sorting out what to buy or lease for a Gladiator to get me far enough until there’s clarity on a 4xe (or at least a bikini pearl one, which says “late availability” in the new order packets— is that Easter Safari?). I was happy about the 25,000 new Gladiators sprinkled around the country (plus the used ones and upcoming leases ending as people get into 2024’s, now potentially delayed from the strike), but the strike would likely artificially hold prices high while also reducing the supply without flooding the market with those 24’s and lease turnovers. Like others have said, Jeep isn’t growing their market with new-new customers, it’s just churning the same people around with trade-ins (a 4xe would likely get new people, but more so on the Wranglers).
Anyways, my TBD options are, A) get into something before year end trying to get a deal on 23’s (“now” isn’t an option, but “soon” is), knowing that Easter Safari or even next summer will hopefully be the color I dream about (ha) and/or a 4xe that I’d want for long term hold (won’t be able to afford full electric like Rivian or GMC’s $100k all electric Sierra) and be facing my first trade-in/ trade-up with a newish car, or maybe my first lease (which are not affordable paths to ownership for gas cars); B) wait until the Easter Safari to see what, if anything, is announced then (which brings me back to a spot just like this year end and once again being a only few months out from the next reveal); C) drive my current car until the 2025 reveal and miss out on the 2023 incentives and market glut (assuming strike doesn’t ruin that), and potentially longer until whatever is revealed is available; D) give up on the gladiator dreams for now and lease a 4xe Wrangler in bikini for the full $7500 tax credit plus $3500 carb state extra credit, and buy it out for a small hit, and purchase a good utility trailer with the savings, until the Gladiator 4xe (or whatever they replace it with, if anything) is ready, even if not bikini… or decide to just keep the 4xe Wrangler. I drive my cars 10+ years at a time.
