What is this piece called? I saw one on a Gladiator and really liked the look.

My understanding was that originally it really was a roll bar, i.e. to keep you from dying when the truck flipped over. It's easy to forget these days that A and B pillars used to be extremely thin and were basically just there to hold up the greenhouse, and as a result rollovers used to have a very high fatality rate.
50 years later style is just following function, the roof on any truck is plenty strong to keep you alive but the aesthetic persists.

It also has a much shorter length to the break over of the windshield. A large percentage of the light output would be wasted…if light location was an objective.

Personally, I think chase Racks look cool, but be advised I have yet to find on that is compatible with the Mopar tri-fold hard tonneau cover. Most hard tri-fold covers mount to a rail inside the bed - same place the chase rack mounts. So even if there is a gap, like on the Tyger chase rack, careful reading reveals it is only compatible with covers that mount to the top of the bed like their Tyger 3-piece hard tonneau cover. https://a.co/d/ek719wV

to knock your garage door off it's tracks when you pull into the garage too fast ... lol.

or when you go into a parking garage and end up hitting a sprinkler pipe.

I've seen both of these happen. I don't think it was a Gladiator but it was kind of funny.
Aw shucks, I've knocked my garage door off its tracks with a Christmas tree tied to the top of an SUV... made me feel reassured that it (the tree) was secured properly ?

Yeah, that thing bolted to your already flimsy bed ain't doing much.
The old roll bars used to bolt through the bed and into cross members on the frame.

years ago i got a new tractor. i had been doing maintenance on it and went out the regular 7' garage door with the roll bar up. i totally forgot to put it back down or I could have just used the 10' tall garage door and gone out.

my neighbor pulled in my driveway and just looked and then backed out. said he was too busy laughing his ass off to get out to see what happened.

i was president of the dumbass mens club that day. the next day my other neighbor (who wasn't very smart) decided to burn some brush. he couldn't keep it going so he got real smart and filled a couple of Gatorade bottles full of gas. well he forgot they were in the pile and was out there trying to light it again. when it exploded, it rocked our house! his dumb ass took a ride in the ambulance that day. i lost my crown of president of the dumbass mens club to him in less than 24 hours!

I feel like they were all the rage in the 80's, then they kind of died out.
Yeah on long bed regular cab trucks with 10" of lift and 35" tires if I remember correctly.

My buddy from work had a really nice 80's step side Chevy with the round roll bar and KC lights until he traded it for a TJ. I would have kept the Chevy and he wishes he did now

It's a peacock bar used for garnering attention from fellow motorists. You can bolt on ornamental lights to it and/or your favorite yeti stickers to add to the flare and really boost how impressed everyone on the road is with you. You can also accent it with external tools like jacks, midget carriers and coolaid containers. People will know you're a serious jeeper the more you add to the outside of your "RIG".
I agree, gladiator already has a roll cage built over the cab, the one in question should not be labeled as a roll bar.
The one for the Comanche was a roll bar bolted down to the frame and fender well and strong enough to prevent the roof from caving in!

It had pass throughs to bolt to the rear subframe as well, it was actually a semi-functional roll bar.

For the couple years I had my MJ I checked nationwide for an original bar weekly, but just never found one.
