Hey all,

So long story short, took it for the code p300 and they have condemned my engine.

They don’t know what’s exactly wrong with it, to find out they have to open the motor which would be 2k bill and at the point better to get a new motor

I was quoted 13k

Gladiator 2020 and all my maintenance done at Jeep. They tried telling me I missed an oil change but I had one done 4K miles ago which I also had them change my spark plugs. Motor is at 102k.
Is this how it usually goes? I’m shocked they won’t even say what’s wrong with my motor

thanks looking for options out here, maybe I should take it for a second opinion somewhere else ?

They don't know what's wrong and you need a new engine, means go somewhere else! They don't want the work unless it is a whole engine.

Multiple misfires could be simple or catastrophic. Let's meet in the middle and say you have a bad cam and rockers. That's not anywhere the $13k. Some have had cams and rockers for $1300. They don't want the liability of doing the repair and it failing again shortly after. If they do a whole engine, there should be a warranty from the manufacturer. Get a second opinion. Does it still run?

I changed spark plugs 4K miles ago,

yea the truck drives,

I guess I’ll eat the diagnostics fees and take it somewhere else, I’m still shocked! They charging the fee but won’t even tell me what’s is wrong with my motor.

I agree with the other post - run from that dealership. You have a RIGHT to know what was found. It's your vehicle and you pay them the fee. You now have a right to know exactly what was found.
Even a trashed cam is not likely to mess up the rest of the engine.

Under normal conditions, a freeze frame can often tell if the issue is ignition or otherwise. They just aren't willing to do the diagnostic work and jumped to replace.

Don't get me wrong - it could be catastrophic like a cracked block or head or something serious, but the odds are against that. Odds are at that age it's injector, coil pack or something cheap and easily fixed.
Even a cam, followers and lash adjusters aren't going to add up to that much money.

I insist on details - not just "your engine is bad". That won't cut it for me.

By chance did you change plugs to resolve the p0300 or did you replace them for time? Just saying, cause I'd go back and look at the work again if you didn't have the code then.

Yea I replaced them because it was the recommended time, there was no code then.

I just picked it up, they said they were able to do 4200 for the motor swap, (big drop from 13k) idk if was used motor or not for this new quote.

They waived the diagnostic fee so I just left there. Looks like they changed the oil? Oil level is at 100% (I looked at the dip stick now and indeed looks very clean.

Should I take it to another jeep dealer or private shop?
I feel like maybe they have flagged my vin (since they said they submitted to good will before and that’s how it dropped to 13k)

The 4200 deal is supposedly a dealer deal.

thanks for all y’all support !

If I was you, I'd ask them for the reason for the bad diagnosis.$4200 is still pretty high for a double cam and rocker replacement. That is if that is the problem. Why would they change the oil on a bad engine? Get the docs and get a second opinion. Maybe look at the sparkplugs and coils?

If you did your own plugs, you should have the aptitude to do more of your own diagnosing. I would be getting a scan tool that does misfire detection and seeing what bank(s) this is leading down and concentrating on that to include even popping the valve covers and inspecting the cams and valvetrain.

Dealerships just go straight to the big ticket billing most times because that is where the real money is and/or they are lazy/incompetent to drill down to the component level and shotgun a new motor is just their default.

In my line of work, we troubleshoot discrepancies a few different ways. The first own being, did you or someone else mess with it. The next would be environment/exposure to the elements followed by, is there a common/ known cause for the discrepancy. A history of trouble in the past would be another thing to look at.

You messed with it, start looking there. There are a few Cam/rocker concerns that would cause p0300. AutoZone could have given you the p0300 diagnostic and they could sell you a crate motor. That's pretty much where this dealer stands.

If you leave it with these clowns, do you think you could trust them to investigate further? At this point they are going to try and verify their assessment that you need a new engine.

I'm hung up on why change the oil on a engine deemed worthless.

I wish you the best then as you are at the behest of whatever shop you use.
