…. If this fell off the drive shaft… how would it come off if it’s still intact and round in the middle?

The edges look like they've been beat to shit. Right by his middle finger there is a noticeable crack.

ya I'm guessing not my jeep, I've looked up and down the drive shafts, there's some boots but they are 100% and everything front to back and my front axle u-joints also 100. So seeing that link with the Rubicon Front axle and the picture of those cv boots were I have u-joints makes sense that it's my friends Rubicon JL, I expect some pictures in the morning will verify. And yes that cage is completely cracked off all the way around on those teeth plus the cracks vertically that one poster noticed I can actually pry that cage enough to make the cracks wider, so it definitely went snappity snap but I think a sudden thing and on the ground....another theory I'm having is while friends jeep was in getting repairs maybe that was replaced as part of the accident the one inside tire did get bumped as the factory rubicon bumper ear pushed inward and I removed that for them at the scene so it could be driven from the scene, maybe the mechanic just set up somewhere on the jeep while replacing it and it just fell off? I dunno, we will figure it out shortly here though, I remember also now the friend said the drive home from the scene as good, but then next day went to drive it and something scared them so they went back and parked it and had it towed to dealer from there, maybe this was that? stay tuned...I'll also get a refreshed description of that second day and what made them turn around and go back on that second day

Just drive it until it stops driving then you will know where that part went or until you hear a big clunk

they t-boned a Ford F-150 and put it on a tow truck,
An F-150 can have CV joints on the front axles. Depending where/how hard they hit it, I can imagine it breaking off and getting lodged somewhere in some nook or cranny on the Jeep until it fell out on the driveway.

I think it's highly unlikely one could drive home with a CV joint in that condition and not know it

Definitely nota part from either Jeep, as stated that’s a cv joint cage, how it ended up in his driveway is anyone’s guess. But someone knows when that comes apart... there is absolutely no way a cv explosion goes unnoticed... but I am 99.99999999% sure that’s what it is

I think you’re right! I got some pics and vids this afternoon and the JL looks good too! A facking mystery for sure! We aren’t done figuring this out, stay tuned. They had a rental Subaru xtrek while waiting for JL but possibly other holiday visitors. We’re on it!? This could end up better than the game of thrones lol. The mystery is how was it missed on driveway when owner was on their shoveling game? It was just seen after I had stopped by...so...what zee fack haha

Thats definitely a CV cage. That can only fall off if the CV joint separates catastrophically. You or whomever it belongs to would know instantly. Big boom and clunking noises immediately. Probably from some tuner car, garbage can or accident scene

It also looks quite expensive.
Also, how could you drop that and not know by the hellified sounds the CV would make?

That CV cage has looks odd to be a Jeep part... The snap ring on the Jeep is on the spline and to my knowledge does not have a recess like in your pic.

This video gives you a pretty good idea of what these look like. If this part was from your Jeep you would know pretty quickly.

is there any other car in your garage it could be off of? typically for that part to come off, there would be some kind of a shaft hanging/dangling. I don't see that on your photos, and if there really was a shaft dangling, you would definitely know it. I've found some of those retainers on the trail, but I'm sure they were off SXS's. Your photos didn't indicate any grease being slung around. I just lost my CVC boot on the Transfer case end of my front drive shaft, and it definitely slings grease, thats how I found it. Its under warranty, so Jeep is replacing it, no charge. I will Immediately pull it and sell it, as it will just fail again, due to the angles from the lift. I'm thinking of going to a Adams 1350 front Driveline, but thats for another thread. Turn the stereo down, stick it in 4 low and mash that gas peddle to the floor while in the dirt or snow, and see what you hear. Finding parts is always alarming, but at this point I'm doubting it came off your JT. Good luck.
