Terra Acoustics' dash panel speakers have my interest, too. The thing I'm wondering about is speaker impedance. Most replacement speakers are 4 ohms--I have redone every speaker except the subwoofer with 4 ohm speakers (6.5" in the knee panel using the Metra pods and 6.5" in the soundbar using...
I bought the Mopar locking gas cap and, while keying it to match the factory key is a trial-and-error process that can take 30 minutes or so, I found it interesting and easy. There was a video online about how to do it. I think it might have been a Quadratec video.
I used these: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13699042/JL-Audio-C1-650x.html
The stock speaker in the knee panel is tiny: 4", and it is the main source of distortion when you turn up the bass or volume. To go with a 6.5", which will really bring the bass forward and eliminate distortion, you need...
Pop the hood and you'll see 7 fasteners holding the grill assembly in. Remove those carefully. The grill comes out easily. If you have the trail cam, it's easy to disconnect both the camera and the water sprayer.
Then there are some clips holding the inserts you want to paint and the honeycomb...
Paint your grill insert to pick up the red in the tow hooks, Jeep badges, and decals!
It's very easy to remove it with a panel tool (don't use a screwdriver--it's too easy to scratch something). A couple of cans of Rustoleum Gloss Red peelable paint and BAM. It's like Plastidip, but the...
I upgraded to these 6.5" MTX component speakers using the JL-JT pods. Because you have the Alpine upgrade, the factory setup already splits the signal for the tweeter and woofer components and you do NOT have to use the included crossovers. Total cost was about $350 and they sound great. Much...
Awesome. The red really "pops" and (I can see from your profile that you have a Rubicon) it picks up those tow hooks nicely. It's an easy afternoon project. You might try the Rustoleum Gloss Red peelable spray paint first to see if you like it--it will hold up for several months. If you do like...
You do not need to remove the entire dash to install new knee panel speakers. I did the knee panel speakers with the new Metra pods last month following the directions at the link below. It was STILL a pain, but not nearly as involved as removing the entire dash would have been...
I agree that the final product looks terrible--those inserts don't match the grain of the factory plastic at all and don't even look to be well-finished. The rough edges and seams are ugly. I would go with the Select Instruments JL-JT Pods (which I have in my Jeep) and some better 6.5" two or...
I just did that mod--the pods are bigger than I thought they would be, but I would think 1 square foot for each side would do it. Certainly no more than 3 square feet total for the two pods. I bought the replacement pods through Crutchfield and used 6.5" speakers. I did not add sound-deadening...
These should work. I have a Rubicon and went with the XL/long size front and rear. They are big, yes, but they flex if they hit rocks while off-roading, and I wanted extra protection from rock chips on my paint. They have a cutout for the Rubicon rock rails that can be punched out or left in as...
I didn't answer part of your original question about paint prep. I did not sand the grill insert. I only cleaned it well with soap and water and then wiped it with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue. The peelable paint adhered fine. I'm not sure what the body shop did when they painted it...
The Rustoleum I used is designed to be peelable; it's just their version of Plastidip with a deeper red. It is supposed to be good for about 6 months; I started to notice some little blemishes from stones and thin spots from trying to clean smashed bugs.
I thought Plastidip's red was a poor...
I used Rustoleum "Gloss Red" to do this. I started with actual Plasti-dip brand, and the red was very orangey and pale--almost salmon-like. The Rustoleum is much closer to the factory red on the hood decals and tow hooks. Taking the front end apart is extremely easy--just be sure you have a set...
