When considering a used vehicle, I think the most important thing is vehicle condition. Check it out really well. Crawl under it to see any oil leaks or if its been trashed off road or sent a lot of time on the beach. Check the oil for signs of never being changed, things like this.
Use multimeter to test voltage for pretty much anything.
Buy this or any other multimeter (this one is cheap $6.99 but will work fine).
Then set multimeter to volts DC (DCV 20 on the meter for 12 volt vehicles).
Place red probe on multimeter into positive terminal on your wireing harness...
Howdy, a ground plane functions as the other half of a 1/2 wave dipole. The vertical element of the antenna is one half, and the ground plane is the other half. You can get the same performance using ground radials rather than a ground plane. This web link can help explain how a 1/2 wave antenna...
This pic is 55 miles from the nearest pavement and about 65 miles to the nearest gas station. I stay at this fishing spot for 5-7 days at a time. I don't know if this counts as "Overlanding" or not.
No cell service out there so I carry ham and a satellite communicator.
Either one of your plans will work fine. Truth be told, you won't notice any difference either way.
I like your idea of on the roof with ground plane, bigger than the hood but higher in the air.
Is there any rule/penalty keeping you from refinancing the first month? If so, you could do that. I would feel zero loyalty to keeping the loan any minimum amount of time to help their commission. Read the fine print on the loan paperwork.
If you look at an amortization table online and you will...
I agree with the "just buy some bubble wrap radios from Walmart or Amazon" ideas presented earlier.
The older baofeng radios will transmit on gmrs freqs, but the newer ones may not (not positive on this) since they came under some scrutiny lately. There are mobile gmrs radios you can buy that...
I wave regardless and don't worry if I get a wave back. Sooner or later folks that aren't aware its a thing will realize its only the jeep drivers waiving at them and maybe they will start to wave back.
No biggie either way. Just be friendly.
I did black bear last year in my JK, we were following a full size p/u tour operator group (seats in the bed of the truck) and he drove like he had done black bear 100 times before. If a full size p/u can do it, any glad should be able to.
I spent 4 yrs in the Regular Army so of course the color of the Jeep I bought was Tank (I spent a lot of time in tanks). My jeeps color is the only subtle clue that I was in the military. Most would not make the connection, which is just how I like it.
I drive 60 miles from pavement and all of it is beach driving several times a year (Padre Island National Seashore, just south of Corpus Christi), I air down down to 17 or so and have made it all the way in 2wd (did it just to see if I could), 4wd is easier.
For soft sand don't be afraid to air...
My ham 2m/440 radio has a menu setting "APO" that stands for "Auto Power Off", it will turn off the radio after 60 min (or and other amount you set) of not touching the controls.
Ide be suprised if newer GMRS radios dont have the same. Check your menu options.
For those looking for nmo mounts without coax, check out DX Engineering, I've used them several times with great service. Just search for "nmo".

I have a 6x12 cargo trailer that I made into a camper, it has AC and a bed, this was a lot cheaper than buying a camper (I'm also in TX). I use it as my fishing/camping rig. Heck, you might be able to park it at your fire station if your Captain is cool. You might want to think about that route...
