Nice set up. The couch is a very cool addition. I couldn't find a topper for a 5 foot bed so had to shorten a six footer 13 inches. Well worth the effort and saved a ton of cash. I used a bed tent extension for awhile when I had a soft topper.
No brainer. $1200 used, only 130 lbs. Fast easy set up and fold up and the side entry is very easy. If you want fast and easy stay away from soft shells.
Pretty funny video but they have a terrific product at the same price point as less durable options. Lots more bang for your buck with the go fast topper. On another note this type of construction lends itself to do it yourselfers using factory extrusion's and fittings. Probably not as strong as...
Not really sure. I was going mostly on the measurements.
I have one picture of the topper on the truck if it helps. I did shorten it 13 inches to fit the gladiator bed.
I don't think you will need to change anything for just the weight of the topper. I have an aluminum contractor topper and didn't have any notable rear height change. Possibly an inch or so? I estimate the topper at about 170 pounds or so because of the doors. The truck does have a 2 inch spacer...
Yes it does. That's why I left mine white in Arizona. Even my Firecracker red truck gets so hot I cant keep my hand on it in the sun. I can put my hand on the white topper without getting burned.
I just looked at the date on the original post, looks like we are reviving an old awning thread. The OP might be long gone, looks like he has a land cruiser now. So I should add I just picked up a RTT that will fit between the uprights on my topper rack. Clears the awning no problem using the...
After vacillating back and forth for the last few months about a RTT or building a Go fast copy. A RTT that fits my narrow topper rack came up locally for a very good price. Much cheaper than the cost of materials for a go fast camper clone. So just like that its on the truck. I need to paint...
Very impressive work. I toyed around with the idea and did shorten a Toyota cap to fit my truck. But took the easy way out when I found a RTT for a ridiculous price. Way cheaper than the cost of materials.
Not really a build thread but some pictures. The width and height are pretty good. I shortened the topper and doors 13 inches.

I agree, a cap with side opening doors/windows is the way to go.
The ones made for Toyota Tacoma crew cabs with 5 foot beds fit pretty well. I didn't want to spend the money and wait for the higher cost south African models. I found an ARE contractor cap for a 6 foot bed Taco and shortened it...
Give it a few years. I still have my jeep and several land rovers but when I hit 60 we got a small motor home for longer trips. And I tow my jeep along just in case.
Its an evolutionary process. Ground tent, Roof top tent, hard shell roof top tent, Tent moved to trailer, Teardrop trailer, Regular travel trailer, motor home.
Great project. The exoskeleton is a terrific Idea and like you said incredibly strong. Any more progress yet? I'm interested in how it turns out. Seriously contemplating copying your internal load bars to support more weight on mine. I don't trust the aluminum rack for a roof top tent and I need...
