AC Vent Air Speed Differs with MPH and Recirculate

Does anyone else notice that the air speed coming out of the vents changes with the speed you drive? If I have it on 1 and speed up to 70 getting onto the highway it will feel like the blower is on max even though it still is on 1. If I hit the recirculate button it then lowers back to 1.

I have never had a vehicle that let that much outside air through the ac system or allowed the outside air to pressurize the cabin to this extent. Does anyone else have this issue? Is it another programming issue with the blend door?

I also have the issues with the auto function of the ac being the worst I have ever used. I would rather have the old school nobs and dials than this poorly programmed system.

Sadly, I’ve have both of these issues as well on a LE. I took the truck to the dealer and the issues (as described) were verified. They spoke with a gladiator engineer and diagnosed the rate of airflow problem as a bad seal or improper install of the air box from the factory. They promptly ordered a new air box and scheduled a repair. No complaints. The temperature disparity in auto or manual mode was not addressed as it was thought this may solve it. The repair required the removal off the dash and 7 days in the shop. When I got the truck back, both the airflow and air temperature issues continued. As a bonus though, I now get a nice whistle in recirculate! Haha. Recirculating does considerably slow the rate of the air down. At 75mph on the highway it’s blowing over what the max setting would be and it’s the only solution.

Time to take a trip back and see what can be done. After owning a fair share of new model vehicles, they’ve all have some sort of issue. Hopefully a bit of patience and persistence will get it resolved. It would seem this isn’t a unique problem... at least the temperature problem.

When not in recirculate the air flow will vary with speed as higher speed will cause more wind pressure at the HVAC air intake at the base of the windshield. It essentially forces more air into the HVAC system. It's exists in basically all vehicles to some extent or another, some worse than others. With the less than aerodynamic shape, I'd expect it to be more affected than a Civic.

My far left vent doesn't have any air flow except if the blower is on high.
