I've searched through the website and can't find what I was thinking of doing, but if anyone has suggestions or can tell me why this is a terrible idea, please let me know: I would like to be able to drive to a destination (a trail or beach, many hours away) with the doors on, and then take off the front doors and carry them in the bed of the truck while cruising around the beach or on light trails (not heavy off-camber rock crawling, just the easier stuff). I was thinking of creating a frame out of 2x4's that I could secure firmly in the bed, and then mount the doors on the frame with the long side (hinges) down, secured by straps. I'm thinking of using pool noodles and/or carpet on the 2/4's to protect the doors while held in the frame.

Has anyone tried to do this? If so, can you share your pictures/details? Likewise, if there is a reason why this is a really dumb idea, please explain why... I think it would work, but it does sound like a "hold my beer" kind of idea when I typed this out and read it back to myself. In any case, I'd appreciate any thoughts/ideas on how to do it. Thanks!

Sadly I ran out of time this summer to try it. Definitely runs the risk of being a "hold my beer" project, though! I might try to come up with something this winter, but I'll keep my eye out if someone on here figures it out!

There are lots of 2x4 and foam padding solutions out there. Probably easy to bed mount.

One other option is to make highly padded door bags.

I like to learn how to make things. Carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, machining, and next up sewing. 500 denier Cordura is pretty cheap by the yard. My original interest was to make a custom backpack, then some shooting sandbags. This would be a simple but large project.
