Why does the spring catch every time I open the hood? There's a cartoonish boing sound leaving the thing quivering. Can't figure it out.

Mine did that as well. I think the rubber pad sticks to the paint a bit and when it releases it gives you the "boing". I waxed the area where the pad hits and that solved it for me.

Mine did it when new as well. I added a piece of rubber between the spring and hood, and also a little silicone grease on the rubber pad. It hasn't made any noise for the past few months.

I loosened the bolt holding it and pushed it further back then re-tightened. It doesn't catch anymore.

Ah, silicone grease, the balm of all things mechanical. I'll give it a shot of white lithium grease. Should do the trick. Thanks.
