Those are a nod to Rick Pewe who was a contributing editor and columnist as well as a champion of the off road community while he worked for several off road magazines, most notably Petersens 4Wheel. He also worked with Jeep (or so the story goes) on developing this generation of jeep vehicles. His signature trademark was wearing flip flops while out wheeling Moab and other places in an old flatfender. I remember reading his articles 25 years ago.....
