Hey Jeep Family,

Does anyone know if the route from Crown King to Prescott is still open and passable? Anyone taken it lately?

It’s open. I haven’t done it recently but it is not one prone to closure.

Thanks a ton!! I havent been in over 10 years!! Do you think I could fit a full size truck through without damage? With a competent driver of course.

Surely, I watched a guy take a small Winnebago down from Prescott. The road where I met him was just barely wide enough to get past him. It’s a fairly well maintained road nowadays…at least the last two times I drove it it was.

Oh man! Sounds entertaining! Thanks for that! Hoping I don't meet him on the trail, or maybe that I do, I'd love to see it! Ha!

It kind of depends when you go honestly. Weekends get pretty busy on the Backway to Crown King and the whole Senator's Highway (Crown King all the way to Jerome); mostly SXS. I've driven them during the week and seen almost nobody.

I thought Senator Hwy only went from Crown King to Prescott. Where does it go from Prescott to Jerome?
Fair enough, I was thinking of the Great Western Trail. The last time I ran the Senator Highway, I cut through Prescott and picked up FR413 (on the eastern side of Prescott) which is the start of Section 6 of the Great Western Trail. They kind of blurred in my mind becuase they are very similar trails/roads. But you are right, Senator is only from CK to Prescott...

But for the OP, I wasn't mis-remembering your ability to get a full size truck up the Senator Highway...

Have you done Desoto Mine recently? I haven’t in a few years and it wasn’t in the JT. I’m debating on whether I want to try it without a lift.
Speaking of Crown King, I was up there Saturday looking at a few properties for sale. Might be a nice place to retire but it’s a lot of work living there full time.
I have not. I’ve plugged it into my Garmin along with some other stuff in the Bradshaw's but just haven’t gotten to it. We started running the AZ Peace Trail recently and have only completed about half of it. It is “blocking up my queue” so to speak.

I have a few friends that live on the mountain and love it. I used to go up at least every other month when in lived in PHX. Miss the chili cook offs (have several 1st place wins), wines in the pines, shortest parade, ect. I almost pulled the trigger on a place up there pre-covid, when the pricing was super low, too bad I didn't. I think about building a medium size cabin and staying through the summer and fall when I retire (in 25 years LOL). Maybe some day. I do want to test my new Raptor up to CK from Bumble Bee, to onto Prescott a in few weeks, would be nice to see some friends. Its been too long.

Taking a full-size truck on the Crown King to Prescott can be done, however there is several areas that are prone to wash outs. There is a very good chance that you would drag your rear end and possible hit the front. I have not run this route this year, but it is usually open. Watch out for Arizona pinstriping.

Desoto Mine is a definite NO with no lift and larger tires.
