So I was up under my dash last night looking at connectors in my new to me used JT. When I seen this plugged into the back of my IBDII reader. Is this a dealer installed GPS tracker? It sure looks like one to me but I just thought I would double check before I go pulling it out.

I ended up pulling it and it was a SWAT GPS tracker that the old owner had installed. I called the company, and they told me that it was still be actively tracked by the registered owner. I done lost it. The person that owned it before me has been tracking me and everywhere I have been. Yeah, I don't live a very exciting life mostly just home or the grocery store or medical appointments but that is just unbelievable that they have been tracking me. It is now pulled out, but it is still active due to a internal battery. I talked to the dealership that I got it and gave them a little piece of my mind and even the store manager called me to say that he was sorry that I had this happen to me and they are trying to figure what they can do to make it up to me for that.

The internal battery is only internal until it falls out of the open case. That will happen if a BFH falls on it. ;)

If it were me I would go back to the dealership and casually stick it under the seat of one of their used vehicles.

I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said seal it up in a plastic bag and put in a foam cooler. Take a trip down to the Columbia river and toss it in and let them track it going out to sea. Since it has a battery back up power going with it.

There are a dozen threads on this. It's usually NOT the dealership tracking you, but an upsell item for theft recovery. Do a search on the other threads of these things.
They aren't following you around LOL - more conspiracy theory stuff.
There are companies that offer theft recovery - and dealerships will often add those things and when you go sign the final paperwork and they ask if you want this protection, or that protection or undercoating or leather protection and so on, oh, we also offer this theft recovery package.................

I've got three of those things. All from Jeeps bought at a dealership that offers that program but they never even ask me because they know over the years I simply say "no" to most of their stuff.

HAHAHA He wasted his time and a cooler. They aren't tracking anyone. Go look up the names on the device - they sell theft recovery/theft tracking services.

No one is tracking you unless it's a USED Jeep and the PRIOR OWNER signed up for theft recovery services.

This is a funny thread.

Yes it’s from the previous owner and I contacted the tracker company and they told me that it’s still active and when it started beeping they turned it on to lost and recover. If it didn’t start beeping I would’ve never even noticed it.

They usually install these things as a "piggy-back" to the OBD port harness so it has power all the time, and they strap them up under the dash out of the way. The OBD port will look normal until you start to follow the harness up into the rest of the wiring up there.
In my first case, the thing fell out of the strap and onto my left foot (back in 2019 with my 2020). I did some digging and looking around using the name on the device and found what it was all about.
When I traded that 2020 for my 2022, I knew what to look for and found another. I also found one in my wife's JLU.
I and multiple others have threads about these things. There are at least 2 or 3 brands and companies that offer the service and I've gotten photos of the windshield stickers 2 dealerships show as a "feature" on their list of "added features" (wheels, tires, lifts and yeah, a theft tracking service package. Some dealers install those on every vehicle they get in, then when they have you decided on a vehicle, they show you a list of other stuff they want you to buy, including p the theft recovery/tracking.
Owners can go to the same company, get the device and sign up for the service themselves, not through a dealer. So those things can end up in a car, truck or SUV two ways - dealership for selling a theft recovery service, or a private owner installing it as a theft recovery service. Most are powered directly from the OBD port. I've got a lot of pictures of them, screenshots of the dealers listing the service, and the info from the company's web site.

Since it was apparently installed by the prior owner, not the dealer, and still had an active plan, it very well COULD have been tracking the OP. No tin foil hat needed. That particular model is often touted as one to track teen drivers and company vehicles as there are options to alert the owner via a smartphone app if the vehicle travels outside a defined area or exceeds a certain speed. Also the owner can see on a map where the vehicle is. I used to work for a municipality, and DPW had something like these on all their trucks and there was a big monitor on a wall in the office that showed where everyone was at all times.

True.
My only point is - if a dealer installed it - that ain't the purpose.

But in the case of a used vehicle - all bets are off.

You can use such things for teens, or for valet parking to send an alert if the vehicle leaves a small area, and more.
(for that matter, some of our JTs have valet mode and other similar feathers.)

That one is one of the more capable versions out there, larger, more features, phone-based software alerts and so on. I had also looked it up earlier today and it's a far better system than the crap dealers install.

Some trucking companies use similar devices to track the truck's locations, speeds and so on.

Did you even read his post before writing this gibberish? They specifically said the previous owner had maintained the tracking account.

Did you even read the title - Dealer installed GPS?
He specifically asked if the DEALER had installed it. I responded to the FIRST post. Go back and read.
